English Language Learner Program

Mission Statement:  The English Language Learner Program of the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District strives to bring every student to proficiency in all aspects of the English language, ensuring success in their academic careers and beyond.

Program Description:  Our English learners are taught by certified and highly qualified teachers who have been trained in effective techniques for teaching English.  In accordance with state law, students receive four hours per day of English language development, including grammar, reading, writing, conversation and vocabulary.  English learners also receive mathematics instruction, enrichment classes such as P.E. and music, and attend lunch and recess with their peers.

Students are assessed a minimum of once per year with the AZELLA (Arizona English Language Learner Assessment) to monitor growth and to determine eligibility for transfer to a mainstream classroom after they've achieved proficiency in English.  These students are then monitored for two years by our department to ensure their academic success.

You will receive a parent letter from the school advising you that your student qualifies for placement within the English Language development program.
